Barcelona Soccer Team Facts

May 31st, 2011

Barcelona is a city long in love with sports, especially the Barcelona Soccer Team.

In addition to hosting the 1992 Summer Olympics, Barcelona hosted parts of the 1982 Football World Cup and has hosted the X FINA World Championship and Eurobasket. The city has two UEFA 5-star rated football stadiums: FC Barcelona’s Nou Camp and the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys.

FC Barcelona’s soccer team is almost a way of life in Barcelona. The rivalry with Madrid rises almost to the point where Barcelona can be considered the Catalonia national team. FC Barca was founded on 29 November 1899 by Joan Gamper, who created the team colors of blue and claret from the Swiss canton in which he lived. Barcelona lost its first ever match with some English expatriates 0-1, but within ten years began a string of Catalan and Spanish championships lasting decades. FC Barcelona went though tough times in the rise to the Spanish Civil War and its aftermath, but was able to recover and by the mid 1940s resumed its championship ways.

FC Barcelona is a sports club containing basketball, handball, hockey, ice-hockey, figure skating, indoor football, rugby, baseball, volleyball and women’s football, but the jewel in the crown has always been association football, or the Barcelona Soccer Team. The Barcelona team has qualified every year for the European competition since it was founded in 1955.

The club motto is “Més que un club” and they refer to their stadium as “Camp Nou.” In English these are “More than a club” and “Our Ground.” Despite a slump at the turn of the century, FC Barcelona has assembled a talented team and once again resumed winning ways. The club currently has a five-year deal with UNICEF, wearing the emblem on their jerseys and paying $1.9 million a year for the privilege.

Among the many claims to fame of the Barca team are that it has more victories than any other Association Football team in the world. They also have more wins in the Copa del Rey, the Spanish tournament, than any other team with 24 victories. There are 18 La Liga Championships, 7 Supercopa de Espana, 2 EUFA Champions League, 4 EUFA Winner’s Cups, 3 Inter-Cities Fairs Cups, 1 Inter-City Fairs Cup Trophy Play-off, 2 European Super Cups, 2 Copa Latina, 4 Copa de Oro Argentina, 22 Catalan Championships, 2 Copa Martina Rossi, 4 Coupe de Pyrenees, 1 Mediteranean League, 2 Copa de Ligua, 1 Copa Barcelona, 1 Lligua Catalana, 5 Copa Catalana and one Little World Cup. It is little wonder Barcelona has embraced the Barcelona Soccer Team and reveres it as a symbol of Catalonia.

Mexican National Soccer Team

May 30th, 2011

The Mexican National Soccer Team ranked 19th in today’s FIFA World Rankings. For thirteen World Cups, the team has earned qualifications in the said international event. Since 1994 Mexico has continuously advanced to the World Cup each time. The country’s best performances were during the 1970 and 1986 FIFA World Cups where they reached the quarterfinals. Mexico’s success features different trophies from various international competitions.

Through the course of time, Mexico has gained a single FIFA under 17 World Cup, a single FIFA Confederations Cup, three CONCACAF Championships, four CONCACAF Gold Cups, three NAFC Championships, and three Pan Am Games Gold Medals. This just shows that the Mexican National Soccer Team has produced success and has proven to be a fierce competition in Soccer around the world.

The most recent FIFA World Cup that was held during 2006 showcased Mexico as one of the eight seeded team during the first round. These eight teams were composed of the powerhouse countries such as Brazil, Argentina, France, England, Germany, Spain, Italy and Mexico. This happened to be only the second instance that a non-hosting CONCACAF country was placed in the seeded teams. The 2006 FIFA World Cup for Mexico showcased a 3-1 win over Iran, and a draw with Angola. The team advanced to the Round of 16 together with Portugal in their group. During the second round, Mexico lost to Argentina in a very tight fashion.

Despite this loss, the National Team of Mexico still stands strong as one of the most anticipated teams and one of the most competitive teams who ever played the game.

Soccer Specific Endurance

May 22nd, 2011

Soccer Stamina, Soccer Endurance.

Perhaps the most important point is that Soccer is not an aerobic sport, rather it’s what you might call an “Interval-Sport”, like most team-sports are.

That doesn’t mean the aerobic energy-systems are not involved -of course they are!

But the emphasis is on the non-aerobic energy systems, meaning we’re looking here at a non-aerobic(emphasis)athletic activity.

What does that mean?

It means don’t waste your time, energy, AND muscle mass(it’s catabolic)with aerobic training!

That’s a big one, because after all: a soccer player only has so much time and energy for training and recovery available!!

Louis Van Gaal, in his Ajax-Era, seems to have been the first premier-league coach to have realized this. Consequently he changed all endurance work into an interval set-up and turned Ajax from an already very good team into probably the very best one of the time.

It has been shown that speed, agility and explosiveness decrease as aerobic fitness increases. The two are not compatible.

Also, with too much jogging(which is a relatively slow movement) you can actually teach your body to be slow!!

Any so-called “Aerobic-Base” work for a non aerobic sport -as is often done post-season/early off-season- is not only unnecessary, it is also counter-productive and can even be damaging.

EST (Energy System Training)

For a beginner usually the soccer sports-training, practice games and the competitive games themselves are more than enough in terms of endurance training.

You want to set your priorities right:

As mentioned, there is only that much time in the day, and only that much energy available for training and recovery…

Here we will look at the simplest possible form of periodizing EST, aka Soccer Specific Endurance Training:

We start with the Atp/Pc Power and progressively move into Atp/Pc Capacity, just immediately Pre-Season. This type of work also automatically improves the aerobic power system somewhat, as a beneficial side-effect, you might say.

Duration: 12 weeks

Linear Progression in this example

Six Phases of 2 weeks each = 12 weeks total program.

Weeks 1-2: 10x10m-starts, rest 120 seconds

(after appropriate warm-up, do 10 sets of 10 meter-starts with 2 minutes rest in-between)

Weeks 3-4: 6×10/10m-starts, 90 seconds rest

(10 meter-start, turn, 10 meter-start back. Aka Cutting-Drills/Suicides-Style. 1.5 minutes rest)

Weeks 5-6: 5×10/15/10m., 60s.

(same, Suicides-Style Cutting drill, 10, turn, 15 back, turn for another 10. One minute rest here)

Weeks 7-8: 6×10/15/15, 30s.

Weeks 9-10: 7×10/15/20/10, 20s.

Weeks 11-12: 8×10/15/20/15/10, 10s.

As you can see, the TUT(Time Under Tension)per set increases while the rest interval decreases progressively.

For further clarification: so the last two weeks you do a Tabata-Style Cutting Drill consisting of(after proper warm-up) 8 sets of 10 meters, turn, 15, turn, 20, turn, 15, turn, 10 meters. Then, after only 10 seconds rest, you repeat for a total of 8 sets. A very short and very hard EST.

You should do the first three phases early: in the day or in the training session, when the players are still fresh. The finishing three phases are best done as a “Finisher”, so after a session and at the end of the training day. Doing them first would compromise the quality of all other work.

AYSO Soccer Schedules Makes a Tag

May 9th, 2011

AYSO soccer schedules, the American Youth Soccer Organizations’ (AYSO) list of games and tournaments for all the youth who embraced playing soccer with all their hearts.

In AYSO soccer schedules, the parents are more excited that their child’s team be included in the tournament. The AYSO club provides an opportunity for the youth to be well versed with sports. They encourage the youth to make use of their youngness to play freely on the game field. The game club believes that the younger generations must be well-trained for the evolution of superb and excellent players. The youth only needs the supervision and training to go on and live with his dream. They are more experimental and hardworking which is very vital to become a successful player.

The AYSO soccer club provides exposure to their players to shape their optimum playing potentials. The schedules were made by matching different teams with different levels of expertise. Through the process, every player grows into a mature player acknowledging every new technique that he learned through continuous practice. A player cannot measure his skill without an opponent. The team cannot determine the oneness of their squad if they’re not exposed to a match. Soccer trainings are best taught along with game tournaments. Lessons in the book are less practical unless applied in the game field. Soccer tournaments make a tag for the most valuable player who gives his outmost performance during the entire season of the game. Soccer teams discover a powerful defense after a tournament. Opponents are needed to test the strength of the player and the team.
